Intraepithelial Lesion
When an intraepithelial lesion is found, or SIL, usually more aggressive treatments are performed, the cause could be attributed to the venereal wart virus (HPV) and some severe vulvar infections.
It is still unknown what causes this condition, but it is strongly associated with HPV and HIV (viruses that reduce the ability of the immune system to fight infections.) Risk factors for developing cervical cancer are smoking, early onset of sexual activity and multiple sexual partners.

SIL is a condition that often precedes the development of cervical cancer if not treated. It is classified as low-grade and high-grade. High-grade SIL and carcinoma in situ (CIN 3) may turn to invasive carcinoma (cancer that spreads to other organs) if not treated in proper time.
