Atypical Pap
An atypical pap means that some abnormalities are found on the cervix; positive pap smear doesn't diagnose a cervical dysplasia, cancer or other disorders, but determines the presence of the virus.
The classifications help physicians determine the appropriate treatment for related cervical problems. If the cervical cells are analyzed and discovered to be unusual, these differences are classified from mild, moderate, and severe dysplasia to carcinoma in situ, and severe invasive cancer.

However, true cancer (carcinoma in situ and invasive cancer) usually requires surgical procedures. Unusual changes in cervical cells in most cases can be treated without invasive measures. Dysplasia describes a pre-cancer condition where cervical cells appear somewhat abnormal under a microscope. An atypical pap means that some abnormalities are found on the cervix; positive pap smear doesn't diagnose a cervical dysplasia, cancer or other disorders, but determines the presence of the virus.
