A cervical cancer vaccine is on the horizon to prevent ASCUS pap smears that can lead to cervical cancer. However since they carry the virus, they are still susceptible to other strains. Once this immunity is achieved, then they cannot be reinfected, nor transmit this particular strain. Approximately 34% of women achieve immunity to abnormal cells of the cervix within 9-18 months. A cervical cancer vaccine is on the horizon to prevent ASCUS pap smears that can lead to cervical cancer.

After the age of 30 a combination Pap smear and HPV test should be performed. Early detection is key. It is important to have your annual exam to detect any symptoms of future cancerous tissue or cells.
