Cervical Screening Programme

A cervical screening programme is not considered a diagnostic procedure but does predetermine the need for further diagnostistic and treatment such a LEEP procedure or cryotherapy. Many women achieve immunity to abnormal cells within 9-18 months. Once this immunity is achieved, then they cannot be reinfected, nor transmit this particular strain. However since they carry the virus, they are still susceptible to other strains. Testing for cancerous cells of the cervix is done through a Pap smear. It is important to have a regular exam to detect any symptoms of future cancerous tissue or cells. Successful treatment much depends on early detection of the problem. After the age of 30, a combination of Pap smear and HPV test should be performed every year.
