HPV's infection can lead to cervical dysplasia, which can be detected with HPV DNA tests.
Cancer is unlikely to progress in women who have regular Pap smear tests, don’t smoke and don't have other cervical cancer risk factors. Without treatment, severely dysplastic cells penetrate deeper layers of the cervix and spread to other organs, causing invasive cancer. It usually takes many years for cancer of the cervix to develop.

Cervical Dysplasia, HPV
This sexually transmitted disease is the main cause of cervical cancer. It induces the growth of abnormal cells that can become malignant.
In many women, infection with certain types of Human papilloma virus is the first step in the progression from a normal cervix to cervical cancer, especially if atypical cells were not detected on the early stage. HPV's infection can lead to cervical dysplasia, which can be detected with HPV DNA tests.
