A bleeding cervix with vaginal discharge should be an indication that a pap smear would be needed.
Birth control pills may cause spotting the first few months. In premenopausal women light spotting a couple of days before the period is common and not worrisome. Spotting of small amount of blood between periods or very heavy periods, lasting for weeks at a time may have different causes.
