Incompetant Cervix
An incompetant cervix is treated with a leep procedure, colposcopy.
It is associated with premature births and may be determined by premature effacement (shortening of the upper vaginal portion and thinning of the walls) and dilation not induced by labor, but rather a structural weakness. Defined as the inability to remain closed throughout an entire pregnancy.

Incompetant Cervix -

There is no method to predetermine this condition, which can result in cerclage (cervical closure via stitching). Risk factors are: previous pregnancy history, surgical trauma, cervical injury, DES (diethylstilbestrol) exposure, and anatomic abnormalities. Commonly prior trauma or an inherited physical is attributed to this condition; however, other reasons exist. An incompetant cervix is treated with a leep procedure, colposcopy.
