Closed Cervix
A closed cervix is one complication that arises from surgeries for dysplasia or an ASCUS interpreted Pap smear.
The affect of infectious diseases on this delicate balance can result in morbidity/mortality events. An antigen over-response or restricted response can lead to cervical impairment. Uterine protection, fertility, and early or late birth depends the changes in cervical conditions from constricted to dilated at the appropriate stages.

ASCUS, Pap Smear
A balance of estrogen, progesterone, prostagladins, and relaxin (associated with cervical softening) has associated effects on cervical contraction and dilation. Typically changes are necessary during pregnancy whereby contraction occurs during the early stages to prevent miscarriages/premature births and dilation or softening during later stages for neonatal passage.
